Smart Chemical and Biological Sensing Laboratory
The Smart Chemical and Biological Sensing Laboratory (SCBSL) at Michigan Technological University is an interdisciplinary lab that integrates advanced nanostructured materials, device design and data driven approaches to develop high performance chemical and biological sensing technologies. Our research interests include 1) electronic noses/tongues, biomimetic materials, and integrated sensing systems for applications in environment monitoring, smart agriculture, food assessment, and healthcare; 2) machine learning-assisted sensing material development.

This new grant is to develop portable and low-cost electrochemical sensors based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs)-nanocomposites that can be easily adapted to detect multiple chemical contaminants in the food industry. (May, 2023)

Rourke won the 2023 Songer Research Award for Human Health at MTU. He also led a team that won $25,000 in prize money for the best pediatric device at the renowned Rice Business Plan Competition. They pitched a wearable device that revolutionizes health care by eliminating the need for centralized clinical testing. (May, 2023)
